According to Health Ministry sources, the total expenditure incurred in the construction of the unit was one billion rupees. The Unit will commence treatment within the next two months.

During his inspection visit, Minister inquired into immediate measures that should be taken to begin treatment.

The Government will spend 30 million rupees annually to maintain the new radiation treatment unit.

Minister Silva noted that the Government was incurring this colossal expenditure with the intention of enhancing health facilities that can be acceed by ordinary people. Hospital Director Dr. Kanishka Karunaratne said about 15,000 new patients seek treatment at the Cancer Hospital annually. He also said that 700 patients visit the clinic daily while 850 are warded at the Hospital.

The new machine forms part of a $6.5 million project to construct a new, fully equipped radiotherapy department at the NCC, the country's largest hospital dedicated to treating cancer. Construction work began in September.

"This will enable us to deliver the most modern treatments, such as intensity modulated radiotherapy. We have not had that capability so far in this country," said Dr. Neelamani Paranagama, deputy director of the National Cancer Centre, which is based in the Colombo suburb of Maharagama.

With Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), clinicians are able to shape the treatment beam to precisely match the proportions of the tumor, providing greater protection for the surrounding healthy tissue and the critical organs from exposure to radiation. Using this approach, the volume of dose can also be varied across the tumor, ensuring the more metabolically active parts of the tumor receive the most radiation.

Dr H.A.P. Kahandaliyanage, Sri Lanka's director general of health services, added that the new equipment will fulfill "a dire need to increase the quality of cancer care available to relieve the suffering of the country's cancer patients."

"The accuracy and precision of this new machine will see a vast improvement in treatments and it will soon be commissioned to make such services available free to all patients in Sri Lanka, who would have had to seek such services abroad in the past," said Dr. Kahandaliyanage.

Varian Medical Systems is the world leader in radiotherapy for treating cancer. More than 4,700 of its advanced Clinac and Trilogy accelerators are installed around the world, treating 100,000 patients per day.

Sri Lanka Cancer Center First in Nation to Install Linear Accelerator

A highly sophisticated Linear Accelerator Machine has been installed by the Health Ministry at the Maharagama Cancer hospital. Under the Central Government financial allocations, Rs 750 million has been spent on the purchase and installation of the machine and the cost of the annual maintenance is around Rs.150 million, the Health Ministry said.

Healthcare Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva told The Island that cancer treatment services in Sri Lanka had made a breakthrough as the Government was able to purchase the latest Linear Accelerator Machine which was being used in leading hospitals in advanced countries. This type of machine was not available in South Asian countries because the machine was highly expensive to purchase and maintain.
